Toyota Motors Corp. has announced Wednesday, November 9, 2011,  that it is recalling about 550,000 vehicles worlwide due to a steering problem.

In a statement released by Toyota, the company said, “the outer ring of the crankshaft pulley may become misaligned with the inner ring.” In case the problem was not repaired, Toyota said it could cause the belt on the power steering pump to detach, leading to “sudden increase in steering effort.”

Toyota has received a total of 79 reports about the defect dating back to 2007, said Corbett. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problems, he said.

Car models included in the recall are Toyota-branded Camry sedan, Solara coupe, Highlander SUV, and Sienna minivan for the 2004 and 2005 model years. In addition, the Toyota recall also covers the 2004 Toyota Avalon sedan and 2006 Highlander HV.

For the Toyota luxury brand Lexus models, the 2006 Lexus RX 400H SUV as well as the 2004 and 2005 ES330 sedan and RX330 crossover are included among the Toyota cars recalled bringing the affected cars to 283,200 Toyota and 137,000 Lexus in the United States. In other locations, about 27,000 vehicles are recalled in Canada and 38,000 recalled in Japan, a Toyota spokesman said.

Toyota said it would fix the problem at no charge, if necessary, replacing the crankshaft pulley on the six-cylinder engines of the models. The company said it would notify vehicle owners of the recall in January 2012, but those who detect a problem should contact a dealership sooner. Consumers can call 800-331-4331 for more information on this Toyota recall.

The recall notification process varies from country to country.

In the meantime, if owners hear abnormalities in their engine compartment, owners are asked to make an appointment with any Toyota or Lexus dealer to have the vehicle inspected for this condition.
